2011 Billabong Pro Tahiti – recap
Video – Pro Tahiti 2011
Here’s the video recap of the 2011 Billabong Pro Tahiti which saw Kelly Slater notching up his third win, having victories in 2003 and 2005. The event also paid tribute to fallen surf star Andy Irons with brother Bruce Irons and friends getting a chance to surf in his honor during a break in the finals.
During the final rounds a rain squall let loose and for a good part of the 30-minute final, Slater and rising star Owen Wright faced off amidst a downpour.
Accepting his 47th elite World Tour victory, Slater dedicated the award to Andy Irons and also gave some advice to Aussie surfer Wright who’s hot on the heels of Slater’s success.
I think with priority you have to wait for the good ones and without priority you have to sneak the ones that people don’t realize that are really good, I was just trying to play it right and not let too many good waves get past me. Owen passed up a lot of good waves in that heat that he didn’t realize were good ones. There were a few waves that he could have gotten nines on, those little inside four footers; those little south ones that ran along the reef were much better than he thought. You have to watch the waves and know the tides. He’ll learn, but he missed a few opportunities out there today.
