Simon Anderson – Creating The Thruster
Video – Inception Of The Thruster
Earlier this year Simon Anderson launched his biography as part of the 30th anniversary of his defining moment at the first Bells event. Now the legend talks how in early 1980, he created the Thruster surfboard.
I wanted to make my equipment really good so when I went out there I’d surf really good, and if I surfed really good, when I came in I’d be really happy. Then I’d go down the pub and celebrate with a few really good mates. That was kind of the cycle, and it was a good cycle and it lasted for years.
Simon changed surfboard design forever with his historic display when he took his 6’6” three-finned Thruster into huge waves on Bells Beach Easter Saturday, 1981.
Along with Co-author Tim Baker, Thrust is a 200 page coffee table style book that documents how an ordinary kid from Collaroy went on change the surfing landscape.
“Simon Anderson’s a hell of a lot more important to surfing than those three fins. I think he was one of the absolute greatest surfers of all time, in any era.” – Wayne Lynch.
It covers his remarkable career as an elite surfer and shaper, including his contest winning boards for world champs Kelly Slater and the late Andy Irons. ‘Thrust’ is available from most good book stores.
