Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles kicks off in clean conditions at Bells BeachMonday, 25 May 2015
Bells Beach, VIC/AUS (Monday 25 May 2015): Round 1 of the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles has been completed in small and clean conditions at Bells Beach on the opening day of the waiting period.With some of the top Indigenous surfers from around the country gathering for the event, the level of surfing was impressive throughout all divisions.Former Australian Pro Junior Champion Soli Bailey (Byron Bay, NSW) impressed in his Round 1 Heat, locking in the highest wave score of the day, a 9.17 ride.“It was pretty slow this morning, but there was some fun ones out there when they came” said Bailey.“Its pretty cold down here, but it should be a fun week I am looking forward to it.”Last years event champion, Otis Carey (Coffs Harbour, NSW), also shined in the small conditions after almost missing his heat.“It was pretty fun out there. It was good to have 30 min heats so everyone got heaps of waves” said Carey.“I almost missed my heat as I was coming back down from my brothers wedding, but I am looking forward to the rest of the week. Hopefully we get some waves.”The Open Women’s Division was completed on the day with Summer Simon (Wollongong, NSW) taking out the Open Women’s Division. The 13 year old Simon, locked in a heat total of 9.50 to Amber Hammer’s (Currumbin, QLD) 6.76.Hammer had one last wave on the siren; however fell just short of the required score.Simon, who has competed throughout the Surfing Australia Junior Pathway was ecstatic to take out the final.“I’m feeling really good, it is my first time down here so I am stoked to win” she said.Other winners on the day were, Simon Knox (Sunshine Coast, QLD) and Russell Molony (Central Coast, NSW) in the Open Men. Robbie Page (Wollongong, NSW) and Matthew Molony (Central Coast, NSW) took out their opening heats in the Masters Division.For the first time ever, surfing fans can catch all the Australian Indigenous Surfing Titles finals action as NITV (Channel 34 free-to-air & Channel 144 Foxtel) broadcasts live from Bells Beach.From Monday 25 to Friday 29 May, the national Indigenous broadcaster will bring viewers daily updates, competitor interviews and news across its digital platforms with live streaming of the Finals event.
